      <title>Influencing a Narrative in Figurative Painting through the use of
	Compositional Devices</title>

      <description xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

	<p>I have just finished writing my dissertation for the honours program
	  in Fine Arts I have been following at <a
	    href="http://www.nas.edu.au/">National Art School in Sydney</a>.
	  Most of the paintings I have finished in the course of this work are
	  present in the <a href="/art">gallery</a>. The introduction reads
	  something along the lines of the following.</p>

	<blockquote>

	  <p>Visual, literary and oral storytelling have been a great part of
	    society since the first humans. My motivation to continue in this
	    tradition is based on the experience of coming from a family culture
	    whereby tales that do not allow the truth to get in the way of a
	    good story are passed down through multiple generations.</p>

	  <p>My research project has focussed on the investigation of the use of
	    compositional devices, more specifically space and colour, as used
	    by figurative painters to create a dramatic narrative space. The
	    narratives that I have focussed on for this project have been
	    primarily sourced from the <a
	      href="http://www.darwinawards.com/">Darwin Awards</a>. The Darwin
	    Awards were created by author <a
	      href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Northcutt">Wendy
	      Northcutt</a> to recognise individuals who contribute to human
	    evolution by self-selecting themselves out of the gene pool by
	    achieving death in ludicrous situations. I have used each tale as a
	    starting point for the general narrative in each painting as they
	    tend to combine drama and humour, which are two integral parts of
	    the human condition.</p>

	</blockquote>

	<p>In there, I discuss some paintings produced by <a
	    href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Beckmann">Max Beckmann</a>,
	  <a
	    href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Campbell_%28artist%29">Steven
	    Campbell</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sue_Coe">Sue
	    Coe</a>, who all use space in various ways to create narrative
	  structure in their work.</p>

	<p>The full document is <a
	    href="publications/2012cuthbert_influencing_narative_compositional_devices.pdf">available
	    right here</a> for your perusal, if you're so inclined.</p>

	<p>I am currently working on a research thesis, and have started writing
